Enrollment Date: April 4, 2024
Location: Robeson County
Lauren Simmons joined SCAP’s Family Empowerment Self-Sufficiency (FESS) Program with a clear vision: to build a better life for herself and her two young children. Balancing family responsibilities and career aspirations, she worked with her case manager, Mr. Dee Mitchell, to set ambitious goals. These included obtaining secondary education, securing stable employment with benefits, and achieving self-sufficiency beyond the poverty guidelines.
The Journey Toward Success
Over the course of just six months, Lauren transformed her life with a determination that reflected her commitment to her goals:
- Completed Education: Lauren graduated from the Medical Sonography Program at Robeson Community College, earning her diploma.
- Employment Advancement: She moved from a part-time PRN Student Tech position earning $23.80 per hour to a full-time Ultrasound Technician role, complete with medical benefits and an increased wage of $31.01 per hour.
- Self-Sufficiency Achieved: Lauren’s accomplishments helped her rise above the poverty guidelines, reaching a level of financial independence she once only hoped for.
Overcoming Barriers
Lauren’s path to success was not without challenges. Balancing her studies with the demands of raising two young children presented obstacles, especially given the tough economic climate. SCAP’s financial support relieved many of Lauren’s burdens, allowing her to focus fully on her education and career. The encouragement and guidance she received from Mr. Dee helped her persevere, offering her a trusted mentor who was just a phone call away.
FESS Program Support
Lauren benefited from multiple FESS services that were crucial to her success:
- Tuition assistance for her Medical Sonography Program
- Scrubs for her Student Tech role
- Graduation pin for her sonography program completion
- State Board Exam fees
- Prescription glasses to support her new career
Lauren’s Reflection
“This program has alleviated so many financial burdens during my journey to obtain my sonography degree,” said Lauren. “It is very challenging going back to school with two young children, especially in this economy; therefore, this support offered by SCAP was very much appreciated. Not only did the financial support help me to obtain my degree, but the encouragement offered by Mr. Dee and knowing he was only a phone call away was very helpful.”
