In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on an extraordinary woman making waves in our community: Dr. Ericka Jones Whitaker, our esteemed CEO. Dr. Whitaker holds the distinction of being the first African-American woman to lead Southeastern Community Action Partnership (SCAP), a testament to her trailblazing spirit and dedication to service.

With an annual budget of $24 million under her stewardship, Dr. Whitaker oversees SCAP’s vital programs across seven counties, demonstrating her commitment to improving the lives of individuals and families in our region. Notably, she is spearheading SCAP’s endeavor to construct affordable housing at the historic I. Ellis Johnson Multifamily Housing site, the organization’s newest and largest project yet.

Under Dr. Whitaker’s visionary leadership, SCAP has experienced significant growth, both in size and service areas. This expansion includes the establishment of additional Head Start and Early Head Start learning centers, providing invaluable educational opportunities to our community’s youngest members.

Dr. Whitaker’s remarkable contributions have not gone unnoticed. She has been honored with the prestigious Carl D. Perkins Humanitarian Award by the Southeastern Association of Community Action Agencies (SEACAA) for her exemplary community leadership, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, where she tirelessly brought much-needed resources to the counties SCAP serves.

Additionally, Dr. Whitaker has been recognized with the Roselle Copeland Stewardship Award for her outstanding work in community action, along with numerous other leadership accolades for her unwavering dedication to serving diverse communities.

A guiding principle in Dr. Whitaker’s life is encapsulated in Proverbs 29:18: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Her unwavering vision for a brighter future drives her professional endeavors, empowering individuals to achieve success and fulfillment in their lives.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ericka Jones Whitaker for her inspirational leadership and tireless advocacy on behalf of our community. Her indomitable spirit serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for us all.
